Stop Competing™ System
What is the Stop Competing™ System?
You know that meeting where a decision got made, everyone nodded, and then nothing changed? Or the week where your team was busy the whole time but you're not sure what actually moved forward?
That's what the Stop Competing™ System was built for.
It's a behaviour-first consulting engagement that installs three operating changes inside your organization: how priorities get clarity and stay relevant as things shift, how decisions stick without someone having to chase them down, and how leadership accountability holds even when pressure builds.
It's not a framework. It's not a training program. It's a change to the conditions that keep creating the same friction, so your team can stop spinning and start making real progress.
Developed in: Brampton, Ontario, Canada Delivery: In-person, virtual, or hybrid, across Canada and globally
The Pattern You Keep Seeing
Most performance problems aren't skill problems. They're system problems.
When the same issues keep surfacing in the same meetings and accountability feels like it belongs to everyone and somehow ends up with no one, that's not a people failure. That's what a system looks like when it's working against the people inside it.
The Stop Competing™ System gets at the root of that. Not the symptoms, not a new set of rules, the actual conditions that make good work harder than it needs to be.
It's built around three installs: Priority Protection, Decision Acceleration, and Reinforcement Engine, each one targeting a specific friction point that shows up in organizations regardless of industry, size, or how many times you've tried to fix it before.
The Three Levers
Priority Protection
Competing priorities are the most common hidden cost in organizations. When everything is urgent, nothing moves. Priority Protection creates a clear, shared structure for how priorities are set, communicated, and defended so teams can make real progress on what actually matters, without the constant renegotiation.
What it addresses: Too many concurrent priorities, unclear escalation paths, work that gets started but never finished, leadership pulling teams in multiple directions.
Decision Acceleration
Slow decisions aren’t always about missing information. Often, they’re about unclear ownership, risk aversion, and a system that punishes decisiveness. Decision Acceleration defines where decisions live, how they get made, and what it looks like when a decision is truly final, so teams stop waiting and start moving.
What it addresses: Decisions that keep getting revisited, lack of clarity on who has authority, escalation overload, analysis paralysis.
Reinforcement Engine
The Reinforcement Engine is what makes the other two stick. Most change initiatives fail not because the ideas were wrong, but because the system quietly rewards old behaviours once the consultant leaves. The Reinforcement Engine builds internal champions, behavioural checkpoints, and leader accountability into how your team works day-to-day so the gains hold long after the engagement ends.
What it addresses: Change that doesn’t stick, teams reverting to old patterns, lack of visible progress measurement, no internal ownership of the new way of working.
The Three Phases
Phase 1 — Baseline
Duration: 2–12 weeks (depending on size of the organization)
Before anything changes, you need to know what's actually happening, not what people think is happening, not what looks fine from the outside.
The foundation of the Baseline is the Evolutionary Agilist™ Index, a proprietary assessment that gives your organization an actual numeric score across eight areas that directly affect how your team performs and how sustainable that performance is:
- Leadership — how decisions get made, communicated, and reinforced
- Strategic Alignment — whether priorities are clear and the organization is pulling in the same direction
- Team Enablement — whether teams can execute without constant blockers or interruptions
- Value Creation — whether the effort being put in translates into outcomes that actually matter to customers
- Trust & Transparency — whether issues surface early or fester until they become something bigger
- Team Health & Growth — whether the pace is sustainable and learning is part of how people work
- Strategic Budgeting — whether funding supports your priorities or quietly works against them
- Delivery & Flow — whether work moves through the system cleanly or keeps getting stuck, delayed, or redone
We gather that picture through observations, interviews, and surveys, behaviours we can see, not just opinions people share in a room.
What you get at the end is a practical, behaviour-first roadmap with clear priorities for where to focus first and why, whether you bring us in for the next phase or decide to move forward on your own.
Outcome: A clear numeric baseline, a map of where friction is building and what it's costing, and a prioritized set of next moves.
50% of the Baseline investment is credited toward Phase 2 if you choose to move forward within 45 days.
Phase 2 — System Engagement
Duration: 6–8 weeks
This is where the work happens. We work alongside your leaders and teams to activate the three levers: Priority Protection, Decision Acceleration, and Reinforcement Engine, directly into how your organization operates. Hands-on, adaptive, and built around your context, your constraints, and your existing tools.
No rip-and-replace. No off-the-shelf framework dropped on top of what you've already built.
Outcome: Real behavioural change embedded in day-to-day leadership and team development, with measurable progress visible within the first two months.
Phase 3 — Sustained Change
Duration: 3–6 months
Honestly? We're working ourselves out of a job here and that's the point.
Phase 3 is about making sure the change holds after we're gone. We work with your internal champions to deepen the gains, adapt the roadmap as your organization evolves, and build the capacity your team needs to keep improving on their own. We address new friction as it surfaces, recalibrate where needed, and make sure accountability and clarity are built into how people work, not dependent on us being in the room.
Outcome: A self-sustaining way of working where your team owns the system, not the other way around.
Who This Is For
The Stop Competing™ System is for leaders who already know their team is capable of more, but something keeps getting in the way.
It’s the right fit when:
- Decisions get made in meetings but nothing changes in the work
- Priority lists keep growing with no clear way to push back
- The same friction shows up in the same places, every quarter
- A previous “transformation” created motion but not momentum
- Leaders feel like they’re managing the symptoms instead of the system
- Teams are stretched, accountability is slipping, and burnout is starting to show
It works across industries: technology, financial services, healthcare, public sector, marketing and creative agencies, manufacturing, and growing small businesses. It is equally relevant for software and non-software organizations.

What You Get
Phase 1: Baseline
Before anything changes, we need to know where the real drag is. The Baseline is a focused assessment that maps exactly where competing priorities, stalled decisions, and leadership friction are costing you. You walk away with a clear picture and a starting point that actually fits your business.
- A custom Baseline Assessment that identifies where priorities are competing, decisions are stalling, and friction is building
- A Baseline Summary report your leadership team can use, not a document that sits in a folder
- An intake process that pinpoints the right entry point for your organization
- A clear view of what's contributing to the strain before we touch anything
Phase 2: System Install (6–8 Weeks)
This is where the behaviour change happens. Over 6–8 weeks, we install three core components directly into how your team works, not as training you'll forget, but as operating habits your team will actually use.
- Priority Protection — a documented priority map that ends the "everything is urgent" spiral
- Decision Acceleration — a clear protocol that removes the "who has final say" confusion permanently
- A leadership alignment session that surfaces the real disagreements before they stall progress
- Bi-weekly leader check-ins throughout the install so nothing slips
- An average 20–25% productivity lift, typically visible within the first two months
Phase 3: Full System (3–6 Months)
The work in Phase 2 creates momentum. Phase 3 locks it in. This is where the system becomes self-sustaining , so the gains hold long after the engagement ends.
- Reinforcement Engine — embedded accountability structures that keep new behaviours in place without ongoing outside pressure
- Internal champions trained to sustain and evolve the system on their own
- A semi-annual re-baseline to measure progress and recalibrate as the business shifts
- A team that knows what to say yes to, what to push back on, and why
- Fewer wasted meetings, stalled approvals, and repeated conversations taking up your week
Results Organizations See
- 20–25% average productivity increase within the first engagement
- ~20% cost reduction in delivery cycles, the equivalent of 2 weeks saved in a 16-week release
- Measurable behavioural change visible within 2 months of System Install
- Teams report clearer priorities, faster decisions, and reduced rework
- Leaders describe a shift from reactive firefighting to predictable forward progress
FAQ
What is the Stop Competing™ System? The Stop Competing™ System is a structured consulting engagement from Berriault & Associates that installs three behaviour-first operating changes: Priority Protection, Decision Acceleration, and Reinforcement Engine, to help organizations reduce friction, speed up decisions, and build accountability that holds under pressure.
How is the Stop Competing™ System different from Agile transformation? Agile transformation typically focuses on process and framework adoption. The Stop Competing™ System focuses on the operating conditions that make any process work: how priorities are set, how decisions get made, and how leadership behaviour is reinforced. It uses Agile principles where they help, but the system is not framework-dependent. It works equally well in non-software organizations.
How long does it take to see results? Most clients see measurable behavioural change within the first two months of the System Install phase. The Baseline phase (2–3 weeks) delivers an actionable roadmap before any system work begins.
Do we need to already use Agile for this to work? No. The Stop Competing™ System is designed to work inside your existing way of working. We don’t require you to adopt a framework, change your tools, or overhaul your delivery methods. We adapt to your context.
We’ve already tried a transformation and it didn’t stick. Will this be different? Yes, and that’s exactly the situation this system was built for. Failed transformations usually fail because the system around people quietly rewarded the old behaviours once the initiative ended. The Reinforcement Engine is specifically designed to prevent that by building accountability into how your team works, not as a separate overlay.
What size organizations do you work with? The Stop Competing™ System is designed for teams and organizations of all sizes, from small businesses to enterprise. Pricing is headcount-banded to reflect the scope of the engagement. We typically work with 2 client organizations simultaneously to maintain engagement quality.
Do you work outside of Ontario? Yes. Berriault & Associates serves organizations across Canada and globally. We deliver virtually, in-person, or hybrid depending on the engagement and your location. Our home base is Mississauga, Ontario, and we have a strong presence in the Greater Toronto Area.
Can the Baseline be done as a standalone engagement? Yes. Many clients start with the Baseline to get a clear picture of what’s actually happening before committing to a full system engagement. The Baseline investment is credited toward the System Install if you move forward within 30–60 days.
How do we get started? Book a focused call at https://meetings.hubspot.com/jberriault. Bring one team that looks “fine” from the outside but feels stretched underneath. We’ll look at what’s contributing to the strain, system, behaviour, or both and find the first change that helps people breathe, speak honestly, and work in a healthier way.
